Energy Efficiency Basics
Did you know, it’s cheaper to save energy than it is to make energy? If you want to offset $100 a month in utility bills, the right place to start is by looking at your current home, starting with your heating bills.
If you heat with natural gas, it’s easy to find the separate monthly item, even if it’s billed by your electric utility. It’s probably $1 per square foot annually to heat a house. That often adds up to more than $2,000 a year. Most homeowners can save 20 to 25 percent by caulking air leaks around windows, doors, foundations, and soffits. Check the attic insulation, too. It’s a wise investment to add up to 12 inches of insulation from the face of studs, (batting or blown-in cellulose.) The easiest fix of all is to renew weather-stripping around all doors and window sashes, and put insulating covers on pet doors. Spending $1,000 on insulating upgrades will cut heating costs by 50 percent and pay for itself in about one year. Heating and cooling systems can also be improved. Change your furnace air filters quarterly. Get ductwork cleaned and air leaks sealed so ducts are fully insulated. If you heat with oil, natural gas, or propane, consider installing solar air heating, modern high-efficiency oil, gas, or propane furnace or ground-source geothermal. When replacing appliances, investigate energy-efficient appliances. The typical refrigerator built in 1980 costs about $154 in electricity to run for a year at today’s average rate of 11 cents per kilowatt-hour. A modern high-efficiency refrigerator runs for about $55 a year. Most hot water heaters can be made more efficient. Fix all leaks. Turn the thermostat down to 122°F (50°C). Be sure all water lines and the tank itself, are fully insulated. Use low-flow aerators & shower heads. A new water-heating system may be cheaper still. A simple solar water-heating system can be installed, especially if you do it at the same time you replace your hot-water heater. Water heating is 30% of our energy costs. The easiest way to cut your electric bill is by replacing light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs waste about 95 percent of their energy as heat. Using LED could save $92 in the first year over incandescent bulbs. Do you leave the TV set on for hours at a time? Cable box consumes approx.310 watts. your TV or Computer uses 5 to 10 watts continuously, even when shut them off unless you unplug everything. The solution: Use a switchable power strip. Our homes have many sources of, “Vampire Power” (power being wasted without our knowledge.) A typical flat screen TV plugged in and never turned on can use as much as $100.00 per year. A large attic fan may draw 370 watts, but did you know that’s cheaper than an air conditioner, which draws about 1,900 watts per ton of cooling capacity. Not sure where to start? Dear Shingles Sufferer,
The varicella-zoster virus is the cause of both chickenpox and later in life, shingles. Once a chickenpox infection runs its course, the virus goes dormant in the body and is stored in the spinal nerves. The virus can reactivate later in life, producing the symptoms of shingles, usually occurring during a time of great stress.
Shingles presents itself different than chickenpox does. One crucial fact about shingles is that it can only develop in people who have had chickenpox earlier in their life. If a person who has never had chickenpox comes in contact with the shingles virus, they will likely develop the symptoms of chickenpox, not shingles.
Shingles begins with a slight itching, or pain caused by clothing rubbing against the erupted area. There may also be a slight seepage of a clear fluid. Within days, the pain and size of the eruption increases without any intervention. Touching it can cause it to spread to other areas. Be very careful not to touch the area around the eyes. In fact, if the area around the eyes becomes affected, contact your medical doctor immediately. Vision can be affected.
As a naturopath, when I found myself with symptoms of Shingles, I began to seek natural solutions and found that the sooner I began using 2 natural remedies, the quicker I could get rid of the Shingles symptoms, before it became worse. Sometimes within 24 hours the symptoms were subsiding, if I caught it within the first 24 hours.
One product is a homeopathic remedy, called “Shingle.” The recommended dosage is ½ dropper full, 2 x's daily, until the remedy is gone. I would also add a combination of essential oils mixed together, and dab a drop or 2 onto the erupted area on the skin. (DO NOT use essential oils around the eyes!
