Why Do We Get Sick More Often in the Winter?

It’s “yuck" season which means at some point you probably have felt (or will) feel under the weather in these coming winter months! Why is getting sick around this time of year (winter and holidays) more prevalent than at other times?
As the season shifts to winter the days get shorter and we often leave for work/school in the dark and return in the dark meaning we have less sunlight exposure.
When it’s cold, we’re less likely to be thirsty and drink much less water than in the warmer months.
Add on top of that higher levels of stress- environmental stress of the cold and stress of the long, busy holiday season. Plus taking in MUCH more sugar during the holiday times starting with the candy at Halloween and rolling right through the champagne toasts for the New Year with plenty of cookies and feasts in-between regardless of which holidays you celebrate.
Lack of sunlight, less water, increased stress and increased sugar intake… BOOM, the perfect storm.
It is the body’s inability to ADAPT to these things that leave the immune system open for attack leading to prime opportunities for sickness.

So how can I avoid the perfect storm and protect myself from illness this season? A few helpful tips to keep you healthy and ahead of the game this yuck season:

1. Start getting adjusted. Spinal adjustments impact the nervous system which has control over the immune system. Chiropractic care is a safe, effective, all natural, hands-on immunity boost!
2. Schedule time to see the sun during your day. Take walks at lunch, sit by a window and soak it up when you can! If natural sunlight is out of the question, I highly recommend investing in a ‘Happy Light’ to use during the shortest, darkest days. I use the Verilux Happy Light and it gives me a boost when I simply can’t make time to see the sun.
3. Supplement with Vitamin D (to make up for lack of sun) and Vitamin C to help fight yuck season symptoms during the winter months. Supplements are tricky due to lack of regulation. Ask a holistic healthcare professional for recommendations on quality and dosage to make sure you’re getting the most effective supplements into your body.
4. DRINK WATER. If you find yourself thirty, it means you’re past the point of dehydration. Keep up drinking habits of half your body weight in ounces per day. If cold water isn’t your thing because it’s too cold already- try warm water with a squeeze of lemon in it for some flavor. You’ll thank yourself for staying hydrated!
5. Make time for self care. Don’t abandon workouts when things get busy. Take time to enjoy reading or writing or music; whatever it is that keeps your stress levels down throughout the year, do more through the crazy holiday season!
6. Limit sugar (and alcohol) intake. I’m not saying to completely deprive yourself because the holidays are a time for joy and celebration, but we all know there are many more opportunities to overindulge in the coming months, so be mindful you don’t undo your year’s worth of hard work in just a few months.
Hope you find this helpful.
Enjoy the holidays- may they be happy, healthy and full of the things and people you love most.

Healthy Aging

It's never too late to improve your quality of life. The most important keys to healthy aging include; eating healthy, keeping fit, and staying connected with friends and family. This goes for both men and women, (but even more so, for women.)
As we age, there are increased health risks and issues which include: heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. The Center for Disease Control suggests that women over 50 are more likely to encounter these
physical limitations then men do. Maintaining physical activity is important for bone density and muscle mass, which are both keys for a healthy metabolism, hormone balance and cognitive function for both men and women.
Our ideas of eating healthy have changed dramatically over the years. We have become more aware of the challenges of eating foods that are sugar-dense and nutrient-poor. We need to consider the importance of portion control, especially as we may be slowing down in our activity. If we aren't burning off the excess calories, then obviously, they will store as fat on our bodies.
If someone is over-eating, what is the reason? Are they emotional eaters? Craving starchy, comfort foods could be due to a low level of Serotonin, which is a brain chemical. But eating those starchy, comfort
foods brings on blood sugar issues, with hypo-glycemia and a need to take a nap, while the body is trying to digest it. By eliminating those complex carbohydrates and instead, eating more nutrient and fiber-dense foods would be your best bet, and /or taking Digestive Enzymes, with or right after your meal to aid the body in digesting those foods.
We are supposed to derive energy from the foods we eat, but when it takes more energy to digest that
food, something is wrong. The key is to eat at lease some “live food” with every meal. By “live food,” I
mean raw and uncooked because cooking the food destroys the natural enzymes that nature includes for
breaking food down. (I remember the comment my own mother made when I gave her digestive enzymes
to take with her meals. Her comment was: “now I don't have to head to the couch after eating a meal.”
Does that apply to you?
Staying fit is another key point. Physical activity is so important and it has been reported to help reduce
the risk of heart disease by increasing HDL cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, and improving heart fitness. Plus, adequate amounts of exercise also help control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of
diabetes. Movement in your daily life is so important. Walking, yoga stretching, strength training and
other forms of exercise are very important as well. Energy In – Energy Out. What are you doing to burn
the energy you have consumed after a meal?
As we age, there is also a greater risk of mood disorders like depression, stress, and anxiety. This is
generally due to decreased physical activity, loss of a life partner or contact with family and friends
(especially as we have become more connected with our “devices.”) Sometimes picking up the phone, or
meeting with a friend in person, is much more beneficial. There is a health benefit that you get from
sharing a good laugh with someone that you just don't get with LOL!
And finally, what is your ability to balance our mental and emotional “stress chemicals?” For the human
body to have the resources to do this naturally, you need the right ratios of nutrients, in balance, to build
and support optional construction and reconstruction, not just physically, but emotionally.
Picture
What you eat, the timing of your meals, plus physical movement, all play a leading role in the health of your stress response, sleep habits, and overall well-being while aging. If you are looking for ways to do this naturally, you may find a health consultation and a ZYTO Health assessment to be beneficial in helping to get or stay in track. Zyto is an energetic, non-invasive, FDA approved tool to do that.
One of the digestive enzymes I prefer to use is a powder, (you mix with water) which also includes a pro-biotic. Take it with or after your meal and notice the difference for yourself. Isotonix Digestive Enzynme.

TIME FOR YOUR SUNSHINE VITAMIN
Benefits of Vitamin D3 with K2
If you live in the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere, this article is for you. We all know how important it is to have some time in the sun each day, for our general health and wellbeing. However, in the winter months, when it is dark by 5 or 6 pm, there isn't much time to bask in the sun. Besides, being bundled up in heavy winter clothing keeps us from getting the recommended time in the Sun, which is so readily available in the summer months.
Many people experience what's now called “Seasonal Affective Disorder” or SAD, with a slip in their mood, moving into depression, during those long, winter months. In the early 2000's, the recommended daily dose of Vitamin D was 400 IU's and was one of those un-necessary vitamins if you drank your milk.
Within a few years, the importance of Vitamin D3, especially during the winter months was discovered to help with the winter mood disorders that so many people suffered from.
At that time, I learned the greater benefits of Vitamin D3 and began taking 5,000 IU's on a daily basis.
(Blood work from your medical doctor will help you to determine how much you should be taking.) IU stands for International Units and is the measurement used for fat soluable vitamins such as A, D and E.
Because it is fat soluable, it stores in the body and is not eliminated so quickly through urination, like the water soluable vitamins B's and C, so too much can create problems too. It was during a dreary, mid-winter season that I began taking it. After days or sometimes weeks of no sunshine, one gets a feeling of pressure, pushing down on the head. One day, I shared a Vitamin D3, 5000, with some work associates. Within 30 minutes, everyone was noticing a difference. And my
daughter, whom I gave a dose to before going to school that day, came home asking me what that was that I had given her? She related that she just had the happiest day of her life. Now, that was a powerful statement.
But, that's not all. There are many other, what I call; “Side Benefits: of Vitamin D3. The following is a list of symptoms that you may be experiencing, which could be eliminated by taking Vitamin D3:
• Broken bones, if you are prone to easily breakage of bones, check your Vitamin D levels in your
blood work. It should be over 40.
• Achey bones, with a low bone density, which could lead to osteopenia, or osteoperosis.
• Muscle aches for no real reason (however, there could be other causes as well.)
• Sensitivity to being in cold, winter weather.
• Slow wound healing. D3 is also in charge of 100's of other biochemical reactions in the skin and
other ares of the body.
• Chronic Fatigue, Vitamin D3 should be the first thing to check with fatigue issues, however, there
are numerous other causes as well.
• Frequent viral infections, colds or other infections.
• Depression and mood disorders, especially during the winter months.
• And the really big one: Vitamin D3 has been found to have several activities that might slow or
prevent the development of cancer, including promoting cellular differentiation, decreasing cancer cell growth, stimulating cell death, and reducing tumor blood vessel formation.
More recently, Vitamin K2 has been recommended to add to your D3 Vitamin. K2 helps to regulate
calcium and puts it where we need it (in bones and teeth) and not where we don't want it (in our arteries, joints and kidneys.) Using Vitamin D3 with K2 helps; prevent kidney stones, Osteopenia, Osteoperosis, or corinary heart disease. Plus, K2 helps to prevent plaque build up on teeth.
In conclusion, if you live in the northern United States or Canada, you most likely, really need to be taking Vitamin D3 with K2. Or if you experience any of the health issues discussed in this article, you would also likey benefit from taking Vitamin D3 with K2. Consult you medical doctor for guidance on dosage.

Ashwagandha
Withania somnifera

The holiday season is definitely upon us. Almost everyone is rushing around doing last-minute gift buying,  cleaning the house, grocery shopping, preparing food for guests, sending out cards, going to parties, visiting relatives, etc., etc., etc.!

No matter what we are doing it can feel like double our usual load at this time of year. Granted some level of stress is part of life. Stress can happen due to traffic delays, demands at work or school, and even regular daily pressures can make you feel like there is always something that must get done.

Stress can weaken your immune system, raise blood pressure, impair digestion and absorption of nutrients and mentally cause fatigue and a feeling of discomfort and brain fog.

Ashwagandha is also known as Winter Cherry or Indian Ginseng. This is an herb that has been used since ancient times. Ayurvedic medicine suggests it can provide the “stamina of a horse”, yet it possesses sedative properties and has a wide range of benefits.

It is an adaptogenic herb meaning it helps you manage stress. Its stress-reducing properties are well known and help your body reduce the overproduction of cortisol. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that helps regulate many functions in the body. When cortisol is out of balance, you may experience anxiety, mood swings, depression, high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, and insomnia. Some studies have shown that Ashwagandha extract can safely improve a person’s resistance to stress by helping to regulate cortisol. It is believed to be helpful for the elderly by providing energy, relieving pain, inflammation and nervous debility.  Ashwagandha may also improve cognitive function and memory in persons with mild cognitive impairment.

Ashwagandha is known as a tonic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, astringent, thermogenic and stimulant. Ashwagandha has potent antioxidant properties to protect the cells against free radicals.

This herb boosts your immune system allowing your body to produce more white blood cells that filter out viruses and bacteria, preventing infections from occurring.

Ashwagandha helps with heart health by regulating blood circulation, preventing blood clots and controlling cholesterol levels. With its natural ability to lower stress levels, it takes that burden from your heart.

You may want to try Ashwagandha for its many benefits, any time of the year.  Again, with the holiday season upon us, you may find that Ashwagandha is the extra boost you need to feel your best.

It is advisable to use herbs from a reputable company. I suggest MediHerb from Standard Process or Gaia Herbs.

If you would like to contact me for further information on this or any other supplement information, please call me at 248-752-6190. Appointments for consultations are also available.

Wishing you all a very Healthy and Happy Holiday Season.  See you in 2020.

Susan Parker Stewart

Bowen Therapy

The Bowen Technique is a form of bodywork that was developed by Tom Bowen in Australia during the 1950s–80s. Bowen therapy works on the muscular and connective tissue systems of the body by using small, precise, gentle movements of the tissue. These movements stimulate the body to heal, by allowing the body to reset itself. Chronic or acute injuries can benefit from Bowen Therapy.
Bowen Therapy is based on a few core principles that Tom Bowen was able to observe and gain information as to how to stimulate the body to heal the body's stored traumas. It is very gentle and continues to work in the body afterward for up to 2 weeks if it is not interrupted. For anyone familiar with other bodywork therapies, it may be clear that some of the areas worked on are also related to acupuncture meridians and trigger points.
  • Fascia: Fascia is a form of connective tissue, which is a white, translucent, sheet of strong tissue. (It is Fascia Tissue also helps hold your organs in place in the body.) This tissue structure of the body is maintained through the muscles and fascia to help us to maintain an upright posture. Tension or weakness of the fascia can cause a misalignment in the spine, nerves, and muscles, causing compensation patterns throughout the body by changing the way the muscles and fascia relate to each other. In addition, it allows the spine or other areas of the body to adopt a better position.

  • Bowen Moves: The classic Bowen move involves stretching and then gently rolling over muscles or tendons with the thumbs or fingers in the areas needing attention. This motion stimulates a signal through the nerves, to the brain and back again to relax, allowing the body to self-correct. During a session, stimulation to the body is minimal, allowing it to make the correction needed without any other distractions during communication from the body to the brain and back again. The practitioner may pause, stretching the fascia,    while waiting to feel subtle impulses as the body responds to small electrical charges. This is created by collagen fibers which create powerful healing effects on the body.

  • Bowen Principles: Two to five-minute pauses are taken between segments of Bowen moves. This allows the brain to get the message and to respond accordingly without too much confusion. Too many moves, without pauses, actually diminish the benefits of the therapy. In other words, less is more. Bowen moves are easily done over light-weight, cotton-knit clothing. Between moves, the body is covered with a blanket after each move, to allow the body to be comfortable, warm and relaxed.

  • Posture: Our bodies can be very resilient when dealing with physical and emotional challenges. Over time, we tend to develop coping strategies to compensate. Look at yourself in a mirror (front, back and sides if possible) to determine if you notice any misalignments in your body. Is one shoulder or hip higher than the other? Is it difficult to sit for a long period of time? Is there ongoing pain?     Does the head or the hips come forward in relation to the rest of the body? Is there ongoing pain in any of the joints? These are all signs that you could benefit from a Bowen therapy session to realign a structural holding pattern that needs to be released.
Picture
After your Bowen session, it is advised to walk, to drink plenty of water, and to rest the body for a few days so you do not reinjure it. It is recommended that you wait for one to two weeks afterward before having another session, or any other type of body therapy. During this time the signaling will continue throughout the body unless you do something to stop the vibrational action of the Bowen treatment. You may find it takes a few days for the body to realign itself and may find the body jerking, pulsing or twitching as it is realigning itself during those days while resting. Each day, the body should loosen up more. Additional sessions are sometimes needed. Waiting a week to two weeks before resuming more Bowen therapy is recommended unless you have done something to re-injure yourself.
If you injure yourself, it is best to have a Bowen session that same day, before you sleep on it. Otherwise, after sleeping on it, the misalignment sets in and it may take more sessions to eliminate it from the body afterward. Bowen sessions are very gentle, allowing the body and the brain to communicate, to allow the healing to take place.
You may be wondering if you could benefit from a Bowen session. One way to determine if Bowen would be helpful for you is, are you still experiencing pain in the body from a long-term injury?
Bowen Testimonials: The following are true testimonials from clients who have experienced benefits from Bowen therapy. Not all clients will experience radical shifts after one session, but some do. Three sessions a week apart is generally recommended. If you are experiencing long term pain, consider trying a few Bowen sessions to see if you could benefit.
Kristin C: After experiencing an automobile accident as a teenager, I had continually experienced low back pain and had been unable to get relief. Ten years later, it became especially challenging as my job sometimes required me to fly. Sitting during a long flight caused a lot of pain and discomfort. My first Bowen Session was the day before a cross country flight. For the first time since my accident, I was able to sit comfortably in a plane for 5 hours without experiencing pain while sitting for so long.
Robert J: Working with concrete requires a lot of heavy lifting and hard work. I had seriously injured my shoulder and it was recommended that I needed surgery on my rotator cuff. In the meantime, I had a Bowen session on the injured shoulder. After the session, the pain subsided each day and within a week, the pain was gone and surgery was not required.
Linda T: At the end of my 6th Bowen session, I experienced an interesting event. After the last move, on the back of my head, an area (above the location worked on) began to pulse. It continued for at least 6 minutes. I was left to lay on the massage table and process the response for about 15 minutes. That same area on my head was where I had experienced an injury as an 8-year-old child, when I passed out and hit my head on a metal table, then a concrete floor. Since that time, there has always been a lump on the back of my head. Later that day, hours after my Bowen session, I reached up and realized the lump was now gone after over 50 years. That was amazing!
James B:  After suffering from sciatica pain for a month with no relief, I decided to try a Bowen session. Each time I had a session, it gave me some relief so I continued. After about 5 weeks, my pain was gone completely.

Realign your thought to bring your life into balance.

Often, I am asked the question...
....what kind of occupation do I have? My answer is that I help people teach people and teach them a happier way of thinking, which can directly have a positive impact around them and it helps people to improve in all areas of their lives. This includes, but is not limited to relationships, money, health, children, parents, jobs, etc. How often in our lives, do we define ourselves by our occupation, the position in our family, or our work, and the amount of money that we make?
Recently, I was in a very challenging situation of my own and I share this story as an example for you. People who know me are aware that my life, like the lives of many others, was not always a beautifully paved highway.
We all have our challenges to deal with and it seems like there are many others who have had quite a few bumps in the road as well. Nevertheless, there is some difference between being challenged by taking care of our aged parents or grandparents when they are not doing well, and when we have to deal with a sudden health emergency of our significant other.
How often in our lives, do we leave things to do for tomorrow? We deprive ourselves of the joy in a moment. Most of us have been taught that we have to work hard in order to have money for a comfortable retirement. Reasoning that I would rather be uncomfortable and work 40, 60, or 80 hours a week now, knowing that I will be more comfortable in my later years.
Many times in my life, and in my coaching practice, I meet people with this kind of thinking. Myself included. Comfortable retirement, a secure retirement, or early retirement? It is all about then. But what about now?
Please don't get me wrong. I have no opposition towards working, nor for a comfortable retirement. But, what I am totally for, is having fun, joy, and laughter in our daily lives. Be happy by enjoying small and large positive events in our daily life. From blue skies and birds singing, good healthy meals, conversation with a friend, to something more significant like a good state of health, a new car, remodeling the house, having a baby or a grandbaby.
We have been taught the plan. First, get an education, get married, have children, put them through college, and only after that do you finally have some freedom and fun. We earned it. Right?
That’s good if we still have some energy remaining in order to have fun. If not? Then what? This is the story of my life this year. Perhaps you can relate, or learn something from it.
It seemed that we had finally come to a place of our long-awaited freedom after our children were grown and living their young adult lives. That’s when the health of my significant other started to decline.
Really? Now? When we are finally free of all our care taking duties? I felt I couldn’t even express the storm of emotions that I was experiencing. I have to be loving, understanding, compassionate…
What I experienced was the total opposite. After dealing with the initial fear of possibly losing him, (fortunately, he is doing well now) my anger arose like a Phoenix bird from the ashes.
I could not find compassion in me and that made me feel even worse. And of course, our body follows our thoughts. My back started to hurt in order to distract me from the stress I was feeling.
Finally, after dealing with this situation myself, with the stress, and the pain, for a week, I asked myself what would I suggest to my child if she or he were to come to me for advice on this subject? Or, what I would suggest to a client in a similar situation?
Of course, I reminded myself about the tools that I offer to my clients when they are dealing with such a challenge, and to create a life that we want.
First, we have to let go of stress, fear, and anger. In working with my many clients, I have found, there is nothing more efficient for this than Meridian tapping and guided imagery.
What if I would visualize the best possible outcome for us? What if I would see us healthy? And when I felt resistance, I was tapping.
I focused on the emotions, which were far from pleasant. And on images and sounds that created stress. I focused on how they are represented in my body? Where did I have and hold tension?
And I tapped on all of it.
Then, I asked myself how do I know if I really have a problem? And what do I believe about it? Who would I be if this problem were gone?
I invite you to take a journey within if you experience any challenges such as these, in your life. Be honest with yourself. Realizing that when the challenge is gone, the colors of life would shine much brighter.
In conclusion to my story, after I tapped on all my emotions, one by one, and practice visualization of good health in our lives, we are now planning a trip to Mexico and to Europe, for next year.
For more information on how tapping and visualization can be helpful for you, please contact me to answer your questions. It is amazing how quickly it works and how powerful the response is in our minds.

  Musings from St. Germain

I have been channeling St. Germain for almost 30 years. I am sharing two of the “many” channeled messages I’ve received over the years. I picked these two as they remind us to be an active part of the play of our lives.
“Eternity doesn't exist as a time and place. It just is. We are all living "eternally" every day. Waiting for a time or place is merely an excuse for not owning your current state - your current recognition of your own eternity.
Choose action and interaction as your course. Really experience your choices. Inaction is a choice and should be enjoyed and honored as any other choice. Whatever your state of being is - just "be it".
Explore all the cracks and crevices of your existence. The joyful and painful alike. You chose them, make the most of that choice. When we embrace our chosen experiences, we allow space to recognize, grow and make different future choices. We only repeat that which has been left unlearned or un-experienced.
Embrace your human condition - it is truly unique unto itself. An opportunity to genuinely experience love in physical form. Such a blessing!”

“We are creatures of habit by nature. We find ourselves "stuck" in the grooves of the worn-out path - the path of surrender. Surrendering to sameness and mindless routine is the opposite of spiritual surrender. Fight the desire for safety and routine. Embrace the wonderment of change and growth.
The world is ours to create. Oh, the woes ahead for those who have forgotten to dream. Do not waste this precious existence merely existing! Embrace the unknown, love the unlovable, forgive the sinners. Do not suffer in silence. Continue to unite and gather in love - for change begins within. When we gather in love, we remember!
We remember that when we gather with the love of God in our hearts and minds, we bring light into this world that overshadows all the darkness and inhumanity. Gathering is creating, building, and sharing the light of God in ways you cannot even imagine! So be it!”

My Story:
It's not much of one really...I've done a little traveling. And I've always had an adventurous palette.
I love trying new things wherever I go. By trade, I'm a website developer. I have a passion for making and eating delicious food. These recipes are just combinations of flavors and textures that I enjoy, and I am happy to share them with you!
I LOVE ALL THINGS FOOD!
Here's todays dish:

  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh hot green pepper, such as jalapeno or serrano
  • 1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 6 cups sugar
  • 4 ounces pectin (recommended: Certo)
  • 4 drops green food coloring
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Process bell pepper and hot pepper in a food processor until finely minced.
  2. Combine pepper mixture, vinegar, and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a rolling boil.
  3. Remove from heat and add pectin and food coloring.
  4. Pour into sterilized jars and seal.
*Makes 6 Half Pint Jars
**These make great gifts! Don't be afraid of the heat! This is truly a sweet treat with just a hint of spice.
***Recommended serving application: This is a great hors-devours! Place a bar of cream cheese on a plate. Pour jelly over the cream cheese. Stick a couple of butter knives in the cream cheese and serve with (unseasoned) crackers of your choice!
